Tree Styles: Chop Order Matters

Every Galatea tree has a Style — the order its parts are meant to be cut. Ignoring it is the most common reason new foragers feel weak.

Fig Style: Trunk → Branches

Start with the center column, then clear the crown.

Mangrove Style: Branches → Trunk → Roots

Climb to the canopy first, drop to the center, then chop the roots.

Why you must follow it

[!CAUTION] Cutting parts out of order applies a 50% Sweep reduction on those hits.

  • Thrown Axes Penalty: Throwing your axe sweeps 50% fewer logs.
  • Stacking Penalties: These two penalties stack multiplicatively. A thrown axe hitting the wrong part of a tree operates at only ~25% effectiveness!
    • Tip: Unlocking the HOTF perk Axe Toss temporarily suspends the throwing penalty; Homing Axe ensures your axes home onto tree blocks automatically.
  • Logarithmic Resistance: Sweep against Toughness is calculated logarithmically. Losing half your Sweep causes you to break significantly fewer blocks than it sounds. You can test your Sweep against specific tree parts in the Sweep calculator.

Practical Routine

  1. Fig: Stand near the center of the trunk. Direct your chops vertically to clear the trunk column first, then sweep the outer branch crown.
  2. Mangrove: Scale up or reach the branch canopy first (Toughness 25). Chop the canopy fully, drop to the middle trunk, and finish off by felling the roots. Both trunk and roots require 50 Sweep to chop efficiently.
  3. Felling Bonus: Always fell the tree completely. Tree Gifts are only awarded when the tree dies, and you share full rewards at $\ge 33%$ tree damage.
